Customers say

Customers find the microwave oven easy to use with quick programming capabilities, and appreciate its perfect size that fits nicely on the counter. The appearance receives positive feedback, with customers saying it looks good, and they consider it a great microwave. However, the functionality and longevity show mixed results, with some units working well while others stop working after 4 months of use and break within 14 months. Moreover, the heat level and noise level also receive mixed reviews – while some say it heats food quickly, others report it doesn’t heat at all, and while some find it roomy, others note it’s little noisy.

we have a back up microwave.
It was bought to replace the one we are using. checked to see if it was ok. old one is still working.

So far, so good, with some caveats.
This review is for the new version (GCST14S1WWW), I can’t find the differences anywhere, though I suspect the child safety lock is one of them. Note that the photos of the New one are actually of the Old version. The New window grille is painted white and the control buttons are darker as a missing Child Safety Lock instructions page. The old version is only available used. We have only had this oven for a few days, so I can’t yet speak to it’s longevity, but I can say that the quality of it’s construction is okay, not great, but okay. My first experience was deactivating the child safety lock. The instructions in the listing are wrong, the lock is now a physical latch release button (see photos). The instructions say to deactivate it you press in and turn clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver. Be careful! I went too far and the entire button popped out. It looked broken, but was not. It went back in and stayed, it’s operation now seems as described. I had initiated a return for this, but cancelled it after thorough testing. (Cancelling a return on Amazon is not easy! Can’t do it online, in chat or speaking with the automated voice system, you HAVE to go through a live representative and even she could not cancel the UPS pickup.)The described dimensions are a little misleading. The outer cabinet actually measures 15 1/2″ deep with a 3/4″ protrusion in the back (see photo), the height is 11 7/8″ plus the feet, width is correct at 21 3/4″. Inside dimensions are 14 1/8″ deep (15″ back to the dimple – see photo), 14 5/8″ wide (15 1/2″ including a side dimple) by 9″ high. The turntable is 12 1/2″.Operation seems normal, all the functions work and the cook time is about the same as our now 5 year old 1150 watt 1.6 cu ft GE microwave (JES1657DM1WW) that has started to rust inside. You do have to enter the cook time minutes and seconds before selecting a power level, you can’t select a power level if you use the quick-entry 1-6 minute time.If we have any problems in the future I will revise this review, but for now we are happy with it. My wife insisted on a white model (including a white door), so we were pretty well stuck with this model. My faith in GE is not great, given the rust problem in our 5-year old one, but I was able to speak to both a parts rep and a service rep about the child safety button, which is neither available nor repairable if truly broken. It works fine and there are no problems other than that federally mandated child safety lock, now fixed, so I’ll give it a tentative 5 stars.

    Nice looking microwave
Came nicely packaged. It is heavy and challenge if you live alone to get it out of the box and onto your surface location. I had to lift it above my shoulders to slip it into the alcove I have for a microwave. BUT I did it and felt gratified to do it. WISH it came with a manual. I still read them. This microwave has two features I didn’t expect…you have to program the time to cook, reheat, etc BEFORE you place the food into the machine. I put the food in first and it didn’t “start” when I pressed that button. Once I made the change it worked great. 2nd you can keep it plugged in without “vampire electricity” being wasted. I should state I do NOT use the microwave as a clock. IF you do, than the last sentence is not valid. Setting up the clock you must keep it plugged in, AND you will be using a bit of electricity. Admittedly not a lot. But I happen to be one of those that try to keep a low “profile” for reduction of utility bills.

Did not work out of box
Right out of the box, the thing doesn’t work. The control panel is lit, I put my inaugural plate of food inside, set it for 5 minutes for time cook on 90 per cent power, hit start and nothing. No light, no turning turntable, no noise, no heat, no power. The time counts down on the control panel as if it’s cooking, but the actual microwaving isn’t happening. So I went through all the troubleshooting steps, called GE, and am referred to an outside appliance repair company. I hope it is fixable but in looking at the consumer affairs complaints, I’m discouraged. In researching potential problems, it sounds like a problem with the door sensor is the most likely culprit, but really. Brand new? Very disappointing.Fixed under warranty. See the comment below. I’ll up it to three stars, subject to it holding up for a few years, as it appears the problem was simply a mistake in assembly at the factory that was easily fixed rather than a parts failure.Scheduling the warranty work was another frustration, as they first gave me the wrong repair service information and got my name entirely wrong. Then the confirmation number I got when I scheduled it was wrong, and the schedule date was wrong. I was contacted by a different repair company a few days later that had received my phone number but they had trouble tracking down the service order themselves to confirm it as a warranty repair because of all the bad info from GE. Once the repair guy came out, he was on time, quickly resolved the issue and there was no problem in regard to the warranty. He did carefully test it to make sure it worked after the fix and it seems to be in operating condition. But he wasn’t too impressed with the quality of the oven or the price I paid for it.A further edit now 8 months post purchase. I again had to call for warranty work on this microwave. It started to show signs of dying a few weeks before it stopped heating completely. The heat and fan would shut off after about two minutes into cooktime, while the clock would continue counting down. At first I thought maybe it was just a heat sensor and the food was overheating, but then on retrieval of food lukewarm throughout, it was clear it was just a death gasp. This time, the warranty scheduling went much more smoothly although they seemed to have no record of my previous call, and the serviceman (this time from GE directly, instead of an independent subcontractor appliance guy) demanded the receipt first thing in the door. (I had my invoice available here online on Amazon thank goodness as I couldn’t find a shipping receipt.) Like the last time, the problem was apparently an electrical connection. The serviceman replaced a connector, and it’s back up and running. But it’s clear this is just a very shoddily made product. I have resigned myself to buying a new one the next time it goes out, which based on this track record, will be after the 12 month warranty expires, but probably shortly after that.I would not buy this product again. It has a lot of bells and whistles, and when it works, it’s fine, but it’s not a quality product for the price. A microwave should have a longer useful life than this one. Two warranty visits within 8 months of purchase is just unacceptable.
